Granny, 75, hangs self
- couldn’t afford to pay grocery bill
A 75-year-old grandmother on Sunday decided to take her own
life by hanging herself in the upper flat of her home. She had
reportedly encountered financial
difficulties.
The woman, Shairoon Alli, a pensioner of Lot 50 D’Edward
Village, West Bank Berbice, lived alone in the upper flat of
the two-storey building.
A relative said that the small pension and the cost of living
that saw her paying light bills,
water bills and buying food was just not enough.
It is understood that the woman owed the shop some money and
was finding it difficult to pay.
The woman had written letters to Office of the President and
had complained to the regional authorities to seek a way out
of her plight.
Her daughter-in-law, Savita Alli, lives in the lower flat with
her children. Reports are that around 14:30
hours on Sunday the woman left to go to a shop in the village.
She returned a while later and went upstairs.
Around 17:00 hr her daughter –in- law left and went upstairs
to check on Alli and found her hanging in the bedroom.
The woman immediately raced down stairs and raised an alarm.
The body was subsequently removed and taken to the Fort
Wellington Hospital where it is awaiting a post mortem.
The police are investigating.
